Best Seasons for Annapurna Base Camp and Poon Hill Sunrise Trekking:
The optimal time to visit is during the spring season, from March to May, when the
weather is clear and the days are longer, although mornings and nights can be cold
above 1,600 meters. The late afternoon can sometimes be overcast with snow and rain
on higher hills. Another favorable period is from mid-September to December, during
autumn and pre-winter, when the mornings and days are clear, providing excellent
views of the peaks and pleasant trekking conditions. However, the days are shorter
during this time, and there is a chance of snowfall in higher areas such as Ghorepani,
Tadapani, and from Chomrong onwards to the Annapurna base camp.
People and Culture:
The Annapurna Base Camp and Poon Hill Sunrise Trek offers a unique opportunity to
experience the diverse hill tribes of the Annapurna region. In the lower, warmer areas,
visitors can encounter a mix of Gurung, Magar, Hindu Brahmins, Chettris, and Dalits,
each with their own distinct traditional farm life and culture.
As the trek ascends into the higher hills, visitors will encounter the Poon-Magar and
Gurung tribes, who are the main hill tribes of the Annapurna and western Himalayan
ranges. These tribes have a rich culture that is interwoven with Buddhism and the
ancient Bon religion, which worships nature spirits and the five main elements of the
earth.
Introduction:
The Annapurna Base Camp and Poon Hill Sunrise Trek is an extended trekking journey
designed for those who want to experience more scenic beauty and cultural richness.
This adventure combines the trek to Annapurna Base Camp with Poon Hill, offering
stunning sunrise views over the majestic peaks. It provides an incredible mix of
breathtaking mountain vistas and visits to traditional hillside villages, where trekkers can
immerse themselves in the vibrant customs of the Annapurna region, influenced by
Hinduism and Buddhism.
This trek is ideal for those who wish to take their time, savoring panoramic views of lush
hills and ridges covered with enchanting forests of rhododendron, magnolia, fir, and pine
trees. In spring, the hills around Ghorepani burst into life with wildflowers in full bloom,
especially Nepal’s national flower, the rhododendron, which grows in various forms,
from trees to shrubs. Ghorepani itself is surrounded by dense rhododendron forests,
considered one of the world’s largest natural gardens, providing an unforgettable
experience on the Annapurna Base Camp and Poon Hill Sunrise Trek.
The journey begins with a short drive from the scenic city of Pokhara and its verdant
valley. From there, trekkers ascend a series of stone steps, winding gradually through
forests of towering trees until reaching Ghorepani village. Located at the base of Poon
Hill, an early morning hike rewards trekkers with one of the most stunning panoramic
views of the Himalayan range, including sunrise over three of the world’s highest
mountains—Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and Manaslu—along with the famous Fish-Tail
peak, Machhapuchare.
After soaking in the views, the adventure continues past Ghorepani, with trails winding
through beautiful forests and offering glorious views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri
ranges. Trekkers then descend toward the large village of Chomrong, a Gurung
settlement and the gateway to the Annapurna Sanctuary and Base Camp. From here,
the trail follows the Modi River gorge, eventually opening into the expansive plateau of
the Annapurna Sanctuary, surrounded by a dramatic amphitheater of towering peaks.
Arriving at Annapurna Base Camp, situated at 4,130 meters, trekkers are rewarded with
sweeping views of the mountains, all from the comfort of a cozy lodge.
After an exhilarating experience at the base camp, the journey retraces steps to
Chomrong, and from there, heads to Jhinu village, where natural hot springs offer a
relaxing dip to soothe tired muscles. The trek concludes with a scenic drive back to
Pokhara, near the tranquil Phewa Lake, marking the end of this remarkable Annapurna
Base Camp and Poon Hill Sunrise Trek adventure.
