Introduction:
The Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek is a scenic adventure on the high ridges of the
Annapurna Himalaya range, beneath the striking south face of Machhapuchare, known
as the "Fish-Tail." This peak, one of Nepal's few unclimbed summits, stands as a
stunning backdrop to the trek. While Mardi Himal, at 5,587 m (18,325 ft), is rarely
climbed, trekking to its base camp at 4,490 m is gaining popularity for its breathtaking
views of the Annapurna range and surrounding mountains.
This week-long trek takes you off the beaten path, away from busy trails and into the
pristine wilderness of the Annapurna region. The route passes through enchanting
forests of rhododendron, pine, magnolia, and fir, which gradually give way to alpine
shrubbery as you reach higher altitudes at High Camp and Mardi Himal Base Camp.
Starting from the vibrant city of Pokhara, famous for its scenic beauty and close
proximity to the mountains, a short drive takes you to Dhampus village. This high-ridge
settlement offers panoramic views of the Annapurna, Manaslu, Dhaulagiri,
Machhapuchare, and Mardi Himal peaks. From Dhampus, the trek leads beyond the
main villages into the more remote corners of the Annapurna range, ultimately reaching
Mardi Himal Base Camp, often called the "Other Sanctuary" for its secluded and awe-
inspiring environment.
At base camp, surrounded by an array of snow-capped peaks, trekkers are rewarded
with panoramic views of unique landscapes and towering summits. The return journey
follows an alternative route, descending to the charming village of Siding near the Mardi
River, where a drive takes you back to Pokhara. Here, you can unwind and enjoy the
serene Mid-West Nepal landscape before returning to Kathmandu and the bustle of city
life.
The Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek offers an unforgettable blend of natural beauty,
remote trails, and mountain vistas, making it a truly memorable Himalayan adventure.

Best Seasons for Mardi Himal Base Camp Trekking:
The most favorable time to visit during the spring season is from March to May. During
this period, the weather is generally clear and sunny, providing excellent visibility for
scenic views and walks. However, it is important to note that mornings and nights can
be cold, especially at elevations above 1,600 meters.
In the late afternoon, there is a possibility of overcast conditions, accompanied by snow
and rain on higher hills. An alternative favorable season is autumn, which spans from
mid-September to November. During this time, the days are typically clear with pleasant
mornings, offering stunning views of the peaks and ideal conditions for scenic walks.
It is worth noting that the days are shorter during the autumn season, and there is a
chance of snowfall in higher areas, particularly from Deurali onwards to the Mardi Himal
base camp.
People and Culture:
The Mardi Himal and surrounding Annapurna region is home to a diverse range of hill
tribes. In the lower, warmer areas, there is a mix of Gurung, Magar, Hindu Brahmins,
Chettris, and Dalits. These tribes engage in traditional farming practices and have
fascinating cultures.
As you ascend to the higher hills, the Gurung tribe becomes the dominant hill tribe. The
Gurung are the main hill tribe of the Annapurna Himalayas, and visitors can witness
their culture in villages such as Dhampus, Potana, and Siding. Gurung culture is
interwoven with Buddhism, and they also practice ancient Bon, a pre-Buddhist sect that
worships nature spirits and the five main elements of the earth.
