Rara Lake, situated at an elevation of 2990 meters (9810 feet) above sea level, holds the
distinction of being the largest and deepest freshwater lake in the Nepalese Himalayas.
With a maximum depth of 167 meters (548 feet), it spans the Jumla and Mugu districts
of western Nepal.
Rara Lake has gained significant popularity as a tourist destination, particularly among
trekkers, due to its unique blend of cultural and natural attractions. The lake serves as
the centerpiece of Rara National Park, offering breathtaking views of majestic
mountains, lush pine, spruce, and juniper forests, and diverse flora and fauna.
The surrounding landscapes, including snow-capped mountains, provide a
picturesque backdrop, while the lake itself resembles a precious diamond nestled
within a ring of white peaks. The trek to Rara Lake offers a tranquil escape from bustling
cities, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the natural beauty and cultural
heritage of the region.
Rara Lake, situated within the Rara National Park, is home to a diverse range of flora
and fauna, including 1074 plant species, 51 mammal species, and 214 bird species. The
local population primarily engages in agricultural activities, animal husbandry, and the
collection of medicinal herbs for their livelihood. Access to the lake is facilitated by
flights from Jumla or the nearby city of Nepalgunj. The optimal period to visit this
remarkable lake is during the months of September to October and April to May.

Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive Kathmandu and transfer to hotel
Upon arrival at the airport, a designated representative from Walk Nepal will be present
to facilitate your transportation to the hotel.
Day 2: Drive from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj
Wake up early in the morning. We will travel from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj by car.
During the journey, we will observe the scenic Trishuli River and rafters navigating its
waters. We will stop for lunch in route before continuing our drive to Nepalgunj. Dinner
and overnight accommodations will be provided in Ne
Day 3: Fly from Nepalgunj to Talcha airport
Our day will commence with an early morning breakfast, followed by the meticulous
packing of our luggage. Subsequently, we will embark on a drive towards Nepalgunj
Airport. The subsequent flight from Nepalgunj Airport will span approximately 40
minutes, culminating in our arrival at Talcha Airport. The evening will conclude with
dinner and an overnight stay at the Talcha hotel.
Day 4: Trek to Rara and overnight at hotel
We will have an early breakfast and commence our trek to Rara Lake. Upon arrival at
the National Park, our luggage will undergo a security check conducted by the Nepal
Army. Our journey will take us through picturesque forests and undulating hills. After a
three-hour trek, we will arrive at the magnificent Rara Lake, often referred to as the
“Queen of Lakes.” We will then check into our hotel and spend the night there.
Day 5: Rara Sightseeing
Our day will be fully dedicated to exploring Rara Lake. We will engage in photography
and potentially embark on a trek to the summit of Murma, where we can capture a
panoramic view of Rara. Accommodations for the night will be provided at a hotel.
Day 6: Trek back to Talcha Airport and fly Nepalgunj and back to Kathmandu
We will wake up early, have our breakfast, and then trek back to Talcha airport. After a
three-hour trek, we will arrive at Talcha airport and patiently wait for our flight. We will
then fly back to Nepalgunj and subsequently to Kathmandu. In the evening, we will
have dinner and spend the night in Kathmandu.
Day 7: Fly back to home
Begin your day with a nutritious breakfast and ensure your luggage is packed
efficiently. Subsequently, complete the hotel checkout process. A representative from
Walk Nepal will provide transportation to the airport.
